Pressure sore (Bedsores) are caused by pressure against the skin that limits blood flow to the skin and are found on bony parts of the body, such as the heels, elbows, hips and base of the spine.
Pressure sores are graded according to their severity of symptoms.
- Mildest stage – only the upper layers of skin are affected
- Prolonged duration of labour
- The birth is complicated by a breech delivery (feet or bottom first in the uterus)
- Pressure sore gets deeper below the surface of skin
- Ulcers gone through second layer of the skin, as well as fatty tissue.
- Pressure sores become more serious and may even muscle, tendons,
ligaments, and bone.
Surgical and Reconstructive Treatment
During surgery, the wound is thoroughly cleaned to remove any dead or infected
tissue, which sometimes includes removing some bone. Reconstructive treatment is most often done in one of two ways using a section of fat, musle and skin known as a “flap.” from other parts of the patient’s body to fill the wound cavity.
1) A flap of healthy skin and tissue near the wound is partly detached and pulled
over the wound.
2) A flap of healthy skin and tissue is completely detached (sometimes called
harvested) from the back, buttocks, or thigh and moved to cover the wound.
