The main cause of skin cancer is overexposure to sunlight and tanning lamps and beds. Ultraviolet (UV) rays from the solar damage DNA in your skin, causing abnormal cells to form a mass of cancer cells. Skin cancer can also be caused due to frequent skin contact with certain chemicals, such as tar and coal.

Major types of skin cancers —

    • check-mark-1 1) Basal cell carcinoma occurs when skin’s basal cells develops a mutation in its DNA. Basal cells are found at the bottom of the epidermis — the outermost
      layer of skin.
    • check-mark-1 2) Squamous cell carcinoma – These are flat cells in the upper (outer) part of the
      epidermis, which are constantly shed as new ones form. When these cells grow
      rapidly, they develop into squamous cell skin cancer.
    • check-mark-1 Melanoma is a type of skin cancer that occurs when pigment producing cells called melanocytes mutate and begin to divide uncontrollably.

Cancerous and other skin lesions can be surgically removed using specialized techniques to preserve health and appearance.
