Your hands do almost everything you do, from cooking and writing to driving and holding your child.
When a hand is injured, the damage often goes beyond what you can see. A cut that looks small may involve a tendon or a nerve, and if it is not treated in time, the hand may never work as it did before.
Knowing which injuries cannot wait can protect your hand’s movement and feeling.

Why the Hand Is So Delicate

In a very small space, the hand packs together:
• Tendons, which bend and straighten the fingers
• Nerves, which give feeling and control small muscles
• Blood vessels, which keep the fingers alive
• Bones and joints, which give structure and movement
• Thin skin, which has little padding over these structures
Because everything lies so close to the surface, even a shallow-looking wound can damage several
of these structures at once.

Common Causes of Hand Injuries

• Kitchen accidents, such as knife cuts
• Broken glass, especially from windows or doors
• Machinery and workshop tools, including grinders, saws, and presses
• Road accidents
• Door and car-door crush injuries
• Firecrackers and burns
• Falls onto an outstretched hand
• Animal bites

Emergency Signs: See a Doctor Straight Away

Go to a hospital with a plastic or hand surgeon immediately if you have:
• A deep cut that gapes open or shows yellow fat, tendon or bone
• Numbness or tingling in a finger after an injury
• Inability to bend or straighten a finger or the thumb
• A finger that looks pale, white, blue or cold after injury
• Heavy bleeding that doesn’t stop with pressure
• A partly or fully cut-off finger, thumb or hand
• A crush injury with severe swelling, a deformed shape or a lot of pain
• A deep cut from a machine, a dirty wound or a bite, which can get infected quickly
• Signs of infection, such as spreading redness, swelling, pus, fever or throbbing pain
If you are unsure, it is safer to be seen. Some injuries, such as a divided tendon or nerve, do not look
dramatic at first.

First Aid: What to Do Right Now

1. Stay calm and control the bleeding. Press firmly on the wound with a clean cloth or gauze.
Keep pressing and raise the hand above heart level. Don’t keep lifting the cloth to check.
2. Remove rings, watches, and bracelets right away, before swelling makes it impossible. If you
can’t remove a ring, tell the doctors.
3. Cover the wound with a clean, dry cloth or sterile dressing. Don’t scrub it hard or apply powders,
creams, turmeric, oil or home remedies.
4. Don’t pull out anything deeply stuck in the wound. Leave it in place, support it and go to
hospital.
5. Keep the hand raised and still. A pillow or sling can help.
6. Don’t eat or drink if you may need surgery, because doctors may need you to have an empty
stomach for anaesthesia.
7. Go to hospital immediately. Ask someone else to drive you. Don’t drive yourself with a badly
injured hand.
A tourniquet is a last resort. Use one only for severe bleeding that threatens life and cannot be
controlled by firm pressure. Note the time it was applied and tell the doctors.

If a Finger or Part of the Hand Is Cut Off

A cut-off finger or hand part can sometimes be reattached, but time is critical.
1. Control the bleeding on the hand with firm pressure and elevation.
2. Find the cut-off part and don’t leave it behind.
3. Wrap it gently in clean gauze or a clean cloth, slightly moistened with clean water or saline.
4. Place it in a clean, sealed plastic bag.
5. Put that bag on ice or in a container of ice and cold water. Keep it cold, but never place the
part directly on ice and never freeze it.
6. Go straight to a hospital with microsurgery facilities. Call ahead if possible so the team can
prepare.
Do not soak the part in water, alcohol or antiseptic, and don’t discard it even if it looks badly
damaged. Let the surgeon decide.

What a Plastic Surgeon Can Repair

Plastic and reconstructive surgeons are trained to treat all the layers of the hand together. Treatment
may include:
• Hand surgery to repair tendons, fix fractures, and rebuild damaged tissue
• Nerve repair and grafting to restore feeling and movement, including more complex cases
involving peripheral nerve and brachial plexus surgery
• Microvascular surgery to reconnect tiny blood vessels, which makes it possible to reattach some
cut-off fingers and hands
• Skin grafts and flaps to cover wounds when skin has been lost
• Reconstruction after injury to improve function and appearance
The type of treatment depends on the injury, how soon you reach the hospital and your overall health.
Not every injury can be repaired, and the surgeon will give an honest assessment.

Why Early Treatment Matters

• Tendons and nerves repair better when treated early, and delay can make surgery harder.
• Blood supply to a damaged finger can fail quickly, and a cut-off part can survive only for a limited
time.
• Infection can spread rapidly in the closed spaces of the hand and may cause stiffness or lasting
damage.
• Stiffness and scarring can develop if wounds are not treated and moved correctly.

Recovery and Rehabilitation

Surgery is only the first step. Good recovery depends on what happens afterwards:
• Follow the splint and dressing instructions exactly, and keep the hand raised to reduce
swelling.
• Attend hand therapy or physiotherapy. Therapists guide gentle exercises that prevent stiffness
and help tendons glide.
• Be patient with nerves. Feeling returns slowly, and it may take months.
• Don’t start using the hand too early or return to heavy work until your surgeon says it is safe.
• Keep follow-up appointments so the team can adjust your plan.

Preventing Hand Injuries

• Use guards, and never bypass safety features on machines.
• Wear gloves and protective equipment in workshops and factories.
• Don’t use machinery when tired or distracted.
• Use cut-resistant gloves and a stable cutting board in the kitchen.
• Keep children away from doors, machinery and firecrackers.
• Handle glass carefully and clear broken pieces with care.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. What counts as a hand emergency?

Deep cuts, numbness, inability to move a finger, a pale or cold finger, heavy bleeding, a cut-off finger
or hand, and severe crush injuries all need urgent care.

2. Can a cut-off finger be reattached?

Sometimes. It depends on the type of injury, how the part has been kept and how quickly you reach a
hospital with microsurgery facilities. The surgeon will assess whether reattachment is possible.

3. How should I carry a cut-off finger?

Wrap it in clean, slightly moist gauze, put it in a sealed plastic bag, and place the bag on ice or in cold
water. Never put it directly on ice, and never soak it in water or antiseptic.

4. How do I know if a tendon is cut?

You may be unable to bend or straighten a finger, or the finger may rest in an odd position. But a
tendon can be cut even if the finger still moves a little, so any deep cut should be checked.

5. How do I know if a nerve is damaged?

Numbness, tingling, or loss of feeling in part of a finger after an injury can suggest nerve damage. It is not always obvious straight away, so get any such injury checked.

6. Should I use a tourniquet?

Only as a last resort for severe, life-threatening bleeding that firm pressure cannot control. Note the
time you applied it and tell the doctors.

7. Is it too late if I've waited a few days?

It is better to be seen as early as possible, but it is still worth seeing a surgeon. Some injuries can still
be treated or reconstructed later, though the options may be different.

8. How long does recovery take?

It varies widely. Simple repairs may take weeks, while nerve repair can take many months for feeling
to return. Hand therapy is a key part of recovery.

9. Will I get full movement back?

It depends on the injury, how soon it was treated and how well therapy is followed. Many patients
regain good function, but no surgeon can promise a perfect result, and your surgeon will give you an
honest outlook.

10. Do old hand injuries still need treatment?

Yes, they can. Stiffness, scars that limit movement, numbness and badly healed injuries can
sometimes be improved with reconstructive surgery.

If your baby has been born with a cleft lip or palate, or a scan has shown one, you probably feel
worried and have many questions. That is completely natural. Cleft conditions are among the most common birth differences, and with the right care, children can eat, speak, smile, and grow up healthy and confident. This guide explains what to expect, stage by stage.

What Are Cleft Lip and Cleft Palate?

During early pregnancy, the tissues of the baby’s face and mouth grow towards each other and join.
A cleft happens when they do not fully close.
• Cleft lip: A gap or split in the upper lip. It can be on one side or both sides, and it can be small or
extend up into the nose.
• Cleft palate: A gap in the roof of the mouth. It may involve the hard palate at the front, the soft
palate at the back, or both.
• Cleft lip and palate together: Some babies have both.
It is not your fault. A cleft is not caused by anything a parent did or did not do. Parents often blame
themselves, but this is a developmental difference, and no one should feel guilty about it.

• Cosmetic (aesthetic) surgery, which reshapes normal features to improve appearance and confidence. So cosmetic surgery is one part of plastic surgery, not a separate field.

How Is It Detected?

Some clefts are seen on an ultrasound scan during pregnancy, especially cleft lip. Others, particularly a cleft palate inside the mouth, are found only after the baby is born. If a scan shows a cleft, you can meet a plastic surgeon before delivery to understand the plan and ask questions.

The First Weeks: Feeding Support

Feeding is often the first challenge, particularly with a cleft palate, because the baby may find it hard
to create the suction needed to feed.
• Special bottles and teats designed for babies with clefts can help.
• Holding the baby in a more upright position can reduce choking and milk coming through the nose.
• Feed slowly and burp often, because babies may swallow extra air.
• Ask your paediatrician or surgeon about feeding techniques and weight monitoring.
Most babies with clefts grow well once the right feeding method is found. Do not hesitate to ask for
help early.

The Treatment Timeline

Every child is different, and the exact timing depends on the type of cleft, the baby’s weight and
health, and the surgeon’s protocol. The stages below are a general guide, and your surgeon will give
you a plan for your child.

Stage 1: Newborn period
Assessment, feeding support, and a care plan. Some centres use a moulding device to gently shape
the lip and gum before surgery, but this is not used in every case.
Stage 2: Cleft lip repair (typically in the first few months)
Surgery closes the lip and often reshapes the nostril at the same time. The aim is a lip that works well
and looks natural, with a scar that fades over time.
Stage 3: Cleft palate repair (typically in the first year or so)
Surgery closes the gap in the roof of the mouth and rebuilds the muscles of the soft palate. This is
important for feeding and for developing clear speech.
Stage 4: Speech and hearing care (through early childhood)
Children with cleft palate have a higher chance of ear infections and fluid behind the eardrum, so ear
checks and hearing tests are important. A speech therapist monitors development. Some children
need speech therapy, and a few need a further procedure to improve speech.
Stage 5: Dental and orthodontic care (childhood onwards)
Clefts can affect how teeth grow. Regular dental care and orthodontic treatment are part of the
long-term plan.
Stage 6: Gum bone grafting (typically in later childhood)
If the cleft involves the gum, a bone graft may be done to support the teeth, usually before the
permanent teeth come through at the cleft site.
Stage 7: Later refinements (teenage years, if needed)
Some young people choose or need procedures to refine the nose, lip scar or jaw once growth is
complete. Not every child needs these.

The Team Behind Your Child’s Care

Cleft care works best when a team looks after the child together, often over many years:
• Plastic surgeon for lip and palate repair and later reconstruction
• Paediatrician for general health, feeding and growth
• ENT specialist for ear and hearing care
• Speech and language therapist for speech development
• Dentist and orthodontist for teeth and jaw growth
• Anaesthetist for safe care during surgery
• Counsellor or social support for the family

Cleft Lip

Looking After Yourself as a Parent

Before surgery: The team checks your baby’s weight, general health and blood tests to be sure the
baby is fit for anaesthesia. You will be told when to stop feeding before the operation.
After surgery: Babies usually stay in hospital for a short time. Pain is managed with medicines, and
you will be taught how to feed, clean and protect the repair. Babies may need soft arm splints or a
particular feeding method for a while so they do not touch the stitches.
At home: Follow wound care instructions carefully, keep follow-up appointments, and call the team if
you notice bleeding, fever, or poor feeding. The scar is red at first and fades gradually over many
months.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. What causes a cleft lip or palate?

A cleft forms when the tissues of the face and mouth do not fully join in early pregnancy. Causes can involve genes and the environment, and it is rarely due to anything a parent did. It is not your fault.

2. Can a cleft be seen before birth?

Cleft lip can often be seen on a detailed ultrasound scan, but a cleft palate is harder to detect and is
sometimes found only after birth.

3. At what age is cleft lip surgery done?

It is usually done in the first few months of life, once the baby is healthy and gaining weight. Your
surgeon will advise the best timing for your baby.

4. At what age is cleft palate surgery done?

It is usually done in the first year or so. The timing balances healing, speech development and your
baby’s health, and your surgeon will confirm it for your child.

5. Will my baby be able to feed normally?

Yes, with the right support. Babies with clefts may need special bottles or positions at first, and
feeding usually becomes easier, especially after palate repair.

6. Will my child be able to speak clearly?

Most children develop good speech after palate repair, often with help from a speech therapist. A few need further treatment, and the team will monitor progress.

7. Will there be a scar?

Yes, but it is usually thin and fades with time. The surgeon works to make the lip look as natural as
possible.

8. Will my child need more than one surgery?

Often yes. Lip and palate repair are the main operations, and some children later need a gum bone
graft or refinement of the nose, lip or jaw. Each child’s plan is different.

9. Why are ear checks important?

Children with cleft palate are more prone to fluid and infections in the middle ear, which can affect
hearing and therefore speech. Regular ear and hearing checks help catch problems early.

10. Can I have another baby with a cleft?

The chance is slightly higher in some families. If you are planning another pregnancy, a doctor or
genetic counsellor can explain your situation.

Many people use the words “plastic surgery” and “cosmetic surgery” as if they mean the same thing. They don’t. Knowing the difference helps you understand what a plastic surgeon actually does, and when to see one, whether you want to change how you look or need to restore how a part of your body works.Dr. Jyoshid R Balan recommends giving your nose adequate time, protection and patience during recovery. While early swelling and bruising are expected, the nose can continue refining for many months, with the final result sometimes taking up to a year to become fully apparent.

What Is Plastic Surgery?

The word “plastic” comes from the Greek plastikos, meaning to shape or mould. It has nothing to do with the material. Plastic surgery is a broad speciality that repairs, rebuilds and reshapes the body, and it has two main branches: • Reconstructive surgery, which restores form and function after injury, illness or a condition present from birth.

• Cosmetic (aesthetic) surgery, which reshapes normal features to improve appearance and confidence. So cosmetic surgery is one part of plastic surgery, not a separate field.

What Is Cosmetic Surgery?

Cosmetic surgery is elective. You choose it to improve something about your appearance, not to treat a medical problem. Common examples include:

• Rhinoplasty (nose reshaping)

• Facelift and neck lift

• Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty)

• Breast augmentation, lift, or reduction

• Tummy tuck and liposuction

• Gynaecomastia surgery for men. Because these procedures are elective, they are usually not covered by health insurance.

What Is Reconstructive Surgery?

Reconstructive surgery treats problems that affect how the body works or looks because of injury, disease, or a birth difference. Examples include:

• Cleft lip and palate repair

• Hand surgery and nerve repair

• Diabetic foot reconstruction

• Post-burn contracture release

• Pressure sore reconstruction

• Skin and oral cancer reconstruction

• Microvascular surgery.

For many patients, this work is life-changing. It can mean using a hand again, healing a stubborn wound, or getting back a normal face after surgery or injury.

Common Myths About Plastic Surgery

“It’s only for looks.” A large part of plastic surgery is reconstructive and medically necessary. “The results always look fake.” Overdone results come from poor planning, not from the surgery itself. A skilled surgeon aims for natural results that keep your facial harmony and match your features. “Only women choose it.” Men also seek rhinoplasty, gynaecomastia correction, hair restoration and eyelid surgery, and more are doing so every year. “It’s a quick fix.” Good surgery needs careful assessment, realistic expectations, proper aftercare and time to heal.

When Should You See a Plastic Surgeon?

Consider a consultation if:

• You want to change a feature you’ve been unhappy with for a long time.

• You’ve had an injury, burn or wound that isn’t healing well.

• You have a scar that limits movement or affects your confidence.

• You were born with a difference such as a cleft or ear anomaly.

• A previous surgery didn’t give the result you hoped for, and you want a second opinion.

• You need reconstruction after cancer treatment. A consultation is not a commitment. It’s a chance to ask questions, understand your options and decide whether surgery is right for you.

Why Your Surgeon’s Qualifications Matter

Every rhinoplasty patient has different surgical needs. Your surgeon may provide instructions regarding medications, dressings, splints, wound care and follow-up appointments.
Following these instructions carefully can help support safe healing and allow your surgeon to monitor your progress.

8. Attend Every Follow-Up Appointment

Plastic surgery is a specialised field with several years of dedicated training after medical school. Before you choose a surgeon, you should: • Confirm that they are a qualified plastic surgeon, not a doctor from another speciality offering cosmetic work.

• Ask how many procedures like yours they perform.

• Ask to see before-and-after photos of similar cases.

• Check that the surgery takes place in a properly equipped hospital.

• Make sure they explain risks as clearly as benefits. A good surgeon will also tell you when surgery isn’t the right choice.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. Is plastic surgery the same as cosmetic surgery?

No. Plastic surgery is the wider speciality and includes both reconstructive and cosmetic surgery. Cosmetic surgery is the branch focused on improving appearance.

2. Does "plastic" mean the surgery uses plastic?

No. The term comes from the Greek word for shaping or moulding. Surgeons use your own tissue or medical-grade implants where needed.

3. Is cosmetic surgery covered by health insurance?

Usually not, because it is elective. Reconstructive procedures needed for medical reasons may be covered depending on your policy, so check with your insurer before surgery.

4. Can a procedure be both cosmetic and reconstructive?

Yes. Rhinoplasty can reshape the nose and also improve breathing. Breast reconstruction after cancer restores both shape and function.

5. How do I know if I need a plastic surgeon?

See one if you have a feature you want to change, a wound or scar that is not healing well, a birth difference, or a result from an earlier surgery that you want reviewed.

6. How long is recovery after plastic surgery?

It depends on the procedure. Many cosmetic patients return to desk work within about a week, while larger surgeries such as a tummy tuck take longer. Your surgeon will give you a timeline for your case.

7. Is plastic surgery safe?

Surgery always carries risks, such as infection, bleeding and scarring. Choosing a qualified plastic surgeon and a well-equipped hospital, and following aftercare instructions, lowers those risks.

8. How do I choose the right plastic surgeon?

Check their qualifications and experience with your specific procedure, look at before-and-after results, read patient reviews, and choose someone who listens and explains things honestly.

9.What happens at a first consultation?

The surgeon will review your medical history, examine the area, discuss your goals and realistic results, explain the options and risks, and answer your questions. You are not obliged to book surgery afterwards.

Rhinoplasty can enhance the appearance and proportions of the nose and, in some cases, improve breathing by correcting structural problems. But achieving the desired result doesn’t end when the surgery is complete. Proper post-rhinoplasty care is an important part of the healing process.
Dr. Jyoshid R Balan recommends giving your nose adequate time, protection and patience during recovery. While early swelling and bruising are expected, the nose can continue refining for many months, with the final result sometimes taking up to a year to become fully apparent.

1. Keep Your Head Elevated

One of the simplest ways to support recovery is to keep your head elevated, particularly while sleeping. This may help minimize fluid accumulation and swelling.
Instead of sleeping completely flat, follow your surgeon’s recommended sleeping position during the initial recovery period.

2. Don’t Rush the Results

It is normal for your nose to look swollen or slightly different from what you expected during the first few weeks.
Swelling can gradually decrease over several months. Some patients may notice temporary asymmetry as swelling settles unevenly. This does not necessarily mean something has gone wrong.
The key recovery tip: be patient.
Your nose needs time to heal and settle into its new shape.

3. Avoid Putting Pressure on Your Nose

During the healing period, protect your nose from accidental bumps or pressure.
Be careful with:
Tight-fitting glasses or sunglasses
Sleeping positions that put pressure on the nose
Crowded environments where your nose could be accidentally hit
Activities where facial impact is possible
Your surgeon will advise you when it is safe to resume normal use of glasses and other activities.

4. Avoid Strenuous Exercise Until You’re Cleared

Exercise may need to be restricted after rhinoplasty, particularly activities involving heavy lifting, intense exertion or the possibility of facial impact.
Light activity may be introduced according to your surgeon’s instructions, but strenuous exercise and contact sports should not be resumed until you receive medical clearance.

5. Protect Your Nose from the Sun

Minimizing sun exposure during recovery is another important part of post-operative care.Follow your surgeon’s advice regarding sun protection, especially while the tissues are healing. Long-term sun protection can also help maintain the appearance of your results.

6. Don’t Blow or Forcefully Clean Your Nose

Nasal stuffiness is common following rhinoplasty. However, blowing your nose forcefully can put unnecessary pressure on healing tissues.
Follow the specific instructions provided by your surgeon regarding nasal cleaning, sprays or other medications.

7. Follow Your Medication and Wound-Care Instructions

Follow-up visits are an important part of rhinoplasty recovery.
Your surgeon can assess swelling, healing and the condition of the nasal structures and advise you when you can gradually return to activities.
Never hesitate to contact your surgical team if something about your recovery concerns you.

9. Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle

Your body needs adequate nutrition and hydration while recovering from surgery. A balanced diet and sufficient fluids can support your overall recovery.
Avoid smoking and follow your surgeon’s recommendations regarding alcohol, supplements and medications during the recovery period.

10. Know When to Seek Medical Advice

Some swelling, bruising, congestion and discomfort can be expected after rhinoplasty. However, unusual or worsening symptoms should be discussed with your surgeon.
Contact your medical team promptly if you develop symptoms that concern you, particularly signs that could indicate infection, significant bleeding or another complication.

How Long Does Rhinoplasty Recovery Take?

Rhinoplasty recovery happens in stages rather than overnight.
The most noticeable swelling generally improves during the first several weeks, but subtle swelling can remain for considerably longer. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the nasal contour may continue refining for up to a year.
Your individual recovery timeline depends on factors such as the surgical technique, extent of correction, nasal structure and how your body heals.

Expert Advice from Dr. Jyoshid R Balan

Blepharoplasty is generally associated with manageable discomfort rather than severe pain, but the experience varies between patients.
Swelling, bruising, irritation and temporary visual symptoms may be more noticeable than pain during the early recovery period.
Your surgeon will provide specific instructions for managing discomfort and protecting the eyes during healing.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. How long does swelling last after rhinoplasty?

Significant swelling usually improves during the first several weeks, but residual swelling can continue decreasing for months. The final nasal contour may take up to a year or longer to fully refine in some patients.

2. Can I sleep normally after rhinoplasty?

Your surgeon may recommend keeping your head elevated and avoiding positions that place pressure on your nose during the early recovery period.

3. When can I exercise after rhinoplasty?

The timing varies depending on the procedure and your healing. Light activity may be permitted earlier, while strenuous exercise and heavy lifting commonly require a longer restriction. Always follow your surgeon’s specific clearance.

4. When can I return to work after rhinoplasty?

Many patients can return to work or school within one to two weeks, depending on their recovery and the nature of their work. Physically demanding jobs may require additional time.

5. Is bruising normal after rhinoplasty?

Yes. Bruising around the nose and eyes can occur after surgery and generally improves during the first couple of weeks.

6. When will I see the final rhinoplasty result?

You may notice significant changes relatively early, but the nose continues to heal and refine. Final results may not be fully apparent for up to a year, particularly because swelling can persist around the nasal tip.

7. Can I wear glasses after rhinoplasty?

Glasses or sunglasses can put pressure on the healing nasal structures. Ask your surgeon when it is safe to wear them normally and whether temporary alternatives are needed.

8. What is the most important rhinoplasty recovery tip?

Follow your surgeon’s instructions and be patient. Avoid unnecessary pressure or trauma to the nose, attend follow-up appointments and give your tissues enough time to heal.

Blepharoplasty:
20Sep

The eyes are one of the first features people notice. When the upper eyelids become heavy, the lower eyelids develop bags, or excess skin creates a tired appearance, many people start wondering whether blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, could help.
But one question often comes up before surgery:
“How will people react after I have blepharoplasty?”
Will friends notice? Will family think you look different? Will people know you had surgery?
In many cases, the goal of well-planned blepharoplasty is not to make someone look like a different person. Instead, the aim is to create a more rested, refreshed and natural appearance while maintaining the person’s individual facial characteristics.

What Is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure performed on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. Depending on the patient’s anatomy and goals, the procedure may involve removing or repositioning excess skin, muscle, or fat.

People may consider eyelid surgery because of:

  • Drooping or heavy upper eyelids
  • Excess upper-eyelid skin
  • Under-eye bags
  • Lower-eyelid skin laxity
  • A consistently tired or aged appearance
  • Excess eyelid skin that affects peripheral vision

Blepharoplasty can have both cosmetic and functional benefits in appropriately selected patients.

How Do People Usually React After Blepharoplasty?

Everyone reacts differently, and the response depends on the person’s appearance before surgery, the amount of correction performed, healing and how natural the final result looks.
1. “You Look More Rested”
This is one of the reactions patients may hope for.
When excess eyelid skin or prominent under-eye bags contribute to a tired appearance, carefully planned eyelid surgery can create a fresher appearance without dramatically changing the overall face.
The objective is generally rejuvenation rather than transformation.

2. People May Notice Something Is Different — But Not Know What

When blepharoplasty is performed conservatively and according to the patient’s facial anatomy, other people may notice that the person looks fresher without immediately identifying the procedure.

Someone might say:

  • “You look really fresh.”
  • “Did you get more sleep?”
  • “You look younger.”
  • “Something looks different, but I can’t figure out what.”

This is one reason why discussing expectations carefully with your plastic surgeon is important. Facial structures work together, and the eyelids should not be considered in isolation.

3. Close Friends and Family May Notice More

People who see you regularly are more likely to recognize a change than casual acquaintances.
Family members may notice differences in eyelid fullness, skin laxity or the overall appearance around the eyes. This does not necessarily mean the result looks unnatural—it may simply be because they are familiar with your usual appearance.

4. Some People May Notice the Change Immediately During Recovery

  • The early postoperative appearance is very different from the final result.
Swelling, bruising, irritation and temporary changes around the eyes are common during recovery. These effects can make the eyes look noticeably different for a short period.
For this reason, it is important not to judge the final result during the first few days.
Bruising and swelling generally improve over approximately 10–14 days, although complete healing can take longer.

Will People Know I Had Eyelid Surgery?

Not necessarily.

A natural-looking result depends on several factors, including:

  • Your individual eyelid anatomy
  • The amount of excess skin and tissue
  • Whether the upper or lower eyelid requires treatment
  • Brow position
  • Skin quality
  • Surgical technique
  • Your healing process
  • Your expectations

For upper blepharoplasty, incisions are generally positioned within the natural eyelid crease, which can help make the resulting scar less noticeable after healing.

However, every surgical procedure produces scars, and healing varies between individuals.

Why Natural-Looking Results Matter

The purpose of cosmetic eyelid surgery is not simply to remove as much skin or fat as possible.
The eyelids are delicate structures. Removing too much tissue can create problems, including difficulty closing the eyes or dry-eye symptoms. Conservative and individualized treatment is therefore important.
A good consultation should focus on what needs correction and what should be preserved.
In some patients, what appears to be excess upper-eyelid skin may also be influenced by brow position or other facial structures. A detailed assessment can help determine whether blepharoplasty alone is appropriate or whether another approach should be considered.

What Do People Experience During the First Two Weeks?

Patients should be prepared for a temporary recovery phase.

Common early effects can include:

  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Mild discomfort
  • Dry or irritated eyes
  • Temporary blurred vision
  • Light sensitivity
  • Watery eyes
  • Puffy eyelids

These effects generally improve progressively as healing occurs.

Many patients become presentable in around 10–14 days, although individual recovery varies and final healing can take several months.

When Will the Final Result Become Clear?

It is important to be patient.
The early postoperative appearance does not represent the final outcome. Swelling gradually decreases and scars continue to mature over time.
Instead of asking, “How do I look today?”, patients should focus on how the appearance changes throughout the healing process.
Your surgeon will provide individualized instructions regarding activity, medications, eye care, follow-up and recovery.

Can Blepharoplasty Make You Look Younger?

Blepharoplasty can rejuvenate the appearance of the eye area by addressing appropriate excess skin, tissue and under-eye changes.
Many patients report feeling that they look more rested and younger after surgery. However, blepharoplasty does not stop the natural aging process, and results vary from person to person.
The goal should be a refreshed version of your natural appearance, not an artificial or completely different face.

Will Blepharoplasty Change My Facial Expression?

When blepharoplasty is performed conservatively and according to the patient’s facial anatomy, other people may notice that the person looks fresher without immediately identifying the procedure.

Someone might say:

  • “You look really fresh.”
  • “Did you get more sleep?”
  • “You look younger.”
  • “Something looks different, but I can’t figure out what.”

This is one reason why discussing expectations carefully with your plastic surgeon is important. Facial structures work together, and the eyelids should not be considered in isolation.

Is Blepharoplasty Painful?

Blepharoplasty is generally associated with manageable discomfort rather than severe pain, but the experience varies between patients.
Swelling, bruising, irritation and temporary visual symptoms may be more noticeable than pain during the early recovery period.
Your surgeon will provide specific instructions for managing discomfort and protecting the eyes during healing.

What Are the Risks of Blepharoplasty?

Like any surgery, blepharoplasty has potential risks.

These can include:

  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Dry or irritated eyes
  • Temporary blurred vision
  • Difficulty closing the eyes
  • Visible scarring
  • Eyelid asymmetry
  • Injury to surrounding structures
  • The possibility of additional surgery

Serious vision complications are rare, but patients should understand all potential risks before deciding on surgery.

How Can You Get a Natural-Looking Result?

The first step is choosing an appropriately qualified and experienced plastic surgeon and having a detailed consultation.

During consultation, discuss:

  • What bothers you about your eyelids
  • Whether the concern is upper eyelids, lower eyelids or both
  • Your desired degree of change
  • Previous eye procedures
  • Dry-eye symptoms or other eye concerns
  • Your expected recovery period
  • Possible risks and complications
  • Whether another procedure may be more appropriate

Realistic expectations are essential. Cosmetic surgery aims for improvement, not perfection.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. Will people know that I had blepharoplasty?

Not necessarily. If the procedure is appropriately planned, the goal can be a refreshed and natural appearance. However, people who know you well may notice that something has changed.

2. How long will my eyes look swollen after blepharoplasty?

Swelling and bruising are common during the early recovery period. They generally improve significantly over about 10–14 days, although residual swelling and scar maturation can continue for longer.

3. Can blepharoplasty make me look younger?

Blepharoplasty can rejuvenate the eye area by addressing appropriate excess skin and tissue. Many patients feel they look more rested or youthful afterward.

4. Will blepharoplasty change the shape of my eyes?

The effect depends on your anatomy and the surgical plan. Your surgeon should discuss the expected changes before surgery.

5. Is blepharoplasty only for older people?

No. Age alone does not determine whether someone is a suitable candidate. The decision depends on eyelid anatomy, concerns, overall health, expectations and whether the procedure is appropriate.

6. Can blepharoplasty improve vision?

In some patients, excess upper-eyelid skin can interfere with peripheral vision. When medically appropriate, upper eyelid surgery may improve the visual field.

7. How long do blepharoplasty results last?

Results can be long-lasting, but the face continues to age naturally. Some patients may experience recurrent drooping or other age-related changes over time.

8. When can I return to normal activities?

Recovery varies. Your surgeon will advise you about exercise, work, makeup, contact lenses and other activities based on your individual healing.

9. Are scars visible after eyelid surgery?

Incisions are designed around natural eyelid creases or other appropriate locations. Scars generally become less noticeable as they mature, but individual scar healing varies.

10. Is blepharoplasty suitable for everyone with under-eye bags?

No. Under-eye bags can have different causes, and not every patient needs the same treatment. A consultation is necessary to determine whether lower blepharoplasty or another treatment is appropriate.

Gynecomastia can affect much more than the appearance of a man’s chest. For some men, it can influence how they dress, exercise, socialize, take photographs, or feel about themselves. Feeling uncomfortable about your body is not unusual, and you do not have to feel embarrassed about seeking help. The good news is that gynecomastia is a treatable condition, and there are several ways to improve both physical comfort and confidence. Here are the key factors worth evaluating before committing to nasal surgery.

Dr. Jyoshid R Balan, a plastic and cosmetic surgeon based in Thrissur, Kerala, regularly guides patients over 40 through these options as part of a personalized, non-surgical rejuvenation plan.

Here’s a practical breakdown of the most effective non-surgical facelift alternatives, what each one actually does, and how to know which combination is right for you.

Understanding Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia is the enlargement of breast tissue in males. It can occur because of hormonal changes, certain medications, weight changes, underlying health conditions, or other factors. In some cases, the exact cause may not be identified. Although gynecomastia is generally not dangerous, it can have an emotional impact. Some men avoid fitted clothing, swimming, gyms, beaches, or social situations because they feel uncomfortable about their chest.

1. Accepting That Gynecomastia Is More Common Than You Think

One of the first steps toward confidence is understanding that you are not alone. Gynecomastia can occur at different ages, including during puberty and adulthood. Hormonal changes, medications, obesity and certain medical conditions can all contribute to its development. Understanding the condition can help replace embarrassment with knowledge. Your chest does not define your masculinity, personality or worth. This is especially relevant for Indian patients, who often have thicker skin and less rigid cartilage than theWestern anatomy that many standard rhinoplasty techniques were originally developed for. A surgeonneeds to adapt technique to your specific anatomy rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach.

2. Getting a Proper Medical Evaluation

Confidence often starts with knowing what is causing the problem. A medical consultation can help determine whether the enlargement is primarily related to glandular tissue, fat, hormonal changes, medications or another underlying cause. A doctor may recommend an examination and, when appropriate, additional investigations. If you notice a firm or hard lump, nipple discharge, significant pain, swelling or changes in the skin, medical evaluation is particularly important.

3. Improving Fitness and Maintaining a Healthy Weight

A thorough medical evaluation before surgery should cover:

  • Bleeding disorders or blood-thinning medications, which increase surgical risk.
  • Smoking status, since smoking significantly impairs healing and increases complication rates.
  • Allergies or chronic sinus conditions, which may need to be addressed alongside structural surgery.
  • Previous nasal trauma or surgery, which changes the anatomy a surgeon has to work with and often makes revision cases more complex than first-time procedures.

Being upfront about your full medical history — including any prior nose surgeries, even minor ones — helps your surgeon anticipate challenges before they happen in the operating room.

4. Choosing Clothes That Make You Feel Comfortable

  • Confidence does not have to wait for treatment.
Choosing clothing that fits properly can make a significant difference in how you feel day to day. Some men prefer structured shirts, darker colours or relaxed fits while they are deciding whether they want treatment.
The goal is not to hide your body forever. It is simply to find practical ways to feel comfortable while you work toward the solution that is right for you.

5. Talking About How You Feel

Gynecomastia can sometimes affect relationships, intimacy, exercise and social confidence. Keeping these feelings completely to yourself can make them harder to manage. Speaking honestly with a trusted friend, partner, family member or healthcare professional can help. Counseling or talk therapy may also be useful when body-image concerns are causing significant anxiety or emotional distress. There is no weakness in asking for support.

6. Considering Gynecomastia Surgery When Appropriate

For men who continue to feel uncomfortable despite lifestyle changes, gynecomastia surgery (male breast reduction) may be an option.
Depending on the individual’s anatomy and the amount and type of tissue present, treatment may involve liposuction, surgical removal of glandular tissue, or a combination of techniques.
The objective is to create a flatter, more naturally contoured male chest.
For appropriate patients, treatment can provide more than a physical change. Studies and patient-reported outcomes have associated gynecomastia correction with improvements in self-esteem and quality of life.

7. Setting Realistic Expectations

A successful treatment should not be about trying to achieve an unrealistic body standard.
During your consultation, discuss what bothers you about your chest and what you would realistically like to change. A qualified surgeon can assess your anatomy and explain the possible benefits, limitations, risks and expected recovery.
Gynecomastia surgery can improve chest contour, but like any surgical procedure, it has potential risks and does not guarantee perfection.

8. Choosing the Right Specialist

If you are considering surgery, choosing an appropriately qualified and experienced surgeon is an important part of the process.
During your consultation, ask about:
 The cause and type of your gynecomastia
 Available treatment options
 Whether liposuction, tissue excision or both may be appropriate
 Expected results
 Scarring and recovery
 Potential complications
 Aftercare and follow-up
A detailed consultation allows you to make a decision based on your individual anatomy and goals.

Confidence Is About More Than Your Chest

Living with gynecomastia can be challenging, but your body does not need to be a source of shame. For some men, confidence develops through fitness, supportive relationships and accepting their bodies. For others, treating gynecomastia is an important step toward feeling comfortable in their own skin. There is no single right answer. If gynecomastia is affecting your confidence or quality of life, speaking with Dr. Jyoshid Balan can help you understand your options and decide whether treatment may be appropriate for you.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. Can gynecomastia affect self-confidence?

Yes. Gynecomastia can cause embarrassment, self-consciousness and emotional discomfort. Some men may avoid activities such as swimming, changing in public or wearing fitted clothing because of concerns about their chest.

2. Can exercise get rid of gynecomastia?

Exercise can reduce overall body fat and improve chest muscle definition. However, exercise may not eliminate enlarged glandular breast tissue. A medical assessment can help determine what type of tissue is contributing to the chest enlargement.

3. Is gynecomastia a serious medical condition?

Gynecomastia is often benign, but new or unusual breast changes should be evaluated by a healthcare professional. A firm or hard lump, nipple discharge, significant pain or skin changes should not be ignored.

4. Can gynecomastia go away without surgery?

Sometimes. Gynecomastia may resolve on its own, particularly when associated with temporary hormonal changes. Depending on the cause and duration, medication or surgery may also be considered.

5. What is gynecomastia surgery?

Gynecomastia surgery, also called male breast reduction, is a procedure designed to reduce excess male breast tissue and improve chest contours. Treatment may involve liposuction, tissue excision or a combination of techniques.

6. Can gynecomastia surgery improve confidence?

For suitable patients, improving the chest contour may help reduce self-consciousness and improve self-esteem and quality of life. However, individual results vary, and surgery should be considered for personal reasons with realistic expectations.

7. How do I know if gynecomastia surgery is right for me?

A consultation with a qualified specialist is the best way to determine whether surgery is appropriate. Your medical history, the cause and extent of gynecomastia, overall health and personal goals will all be considered.

8. Will gynecomastia come back after surgery?

The possibility of recurrence depends on the underlying cause and individual circumstances. Identifying and addressing contributing factors can be important. Maintaining a stable, healthy weight and following your surgeon’s recommendations can also support long-term results.Book an appointment with Dr. Jyoshid R Balan
